Simone’s experience

I’m Simone Ravanelli, an Italian student from Trento (region of Trentino Alto Adige). I came to Ireland the last week of August 2014 and I started my internship with Archer Heritage on 22 of September. I did my internship for about 5 weeks in Carrigaline (Co.Cork) and then I worked in Ballbriggan at the Archer Heritage’s office until 12 of December. I worked at the 5 sites of Carrigaline area where I excavated, scale the drawing maps of the sites and put the fence for the security of the site. In Ballbriggan I cleaned bones, stones and floated the soil samples. I digitalized with AutoCAD the maps of Kildare and Carrownurlar and I put some pictures of the works of 2014 on the company’s website.

Ballindine

Excavation of seven sites on a stretch of road re-alignment south of Ballindine village revealed very extensive wood deposits. A large hollowed out tree trunk was used to construct the base of the largest trough.

Kildare Town

A burial site was uncovered which had no previous suggestion of archaeological potential. Thirty five burials were removed exhibiting the usual north-south alignment probably dating from the medieval period.

R611 Carrigaline Novemver 2014

Excavation work was carried out on 5 sites along the route of a proposed western town bypass for Carrigaline in Co. Cork. The largest site was at Kilmoney on the southern end of the new road where it joins the Youghal Road. The site was unusual in that it was elevated with no obvious water source – in recent times it had been the site for horse racing during festival times in the town.
